GEMS is a girls project running in the Heath End & Hale area of Farnham.
GEMS was launched in September 2009 with the follwing vision.

GEMS Vision
Statement:

“GEMS provides a series of evenings and outings especially for teenage girls aged between 11-17 years living predominantly in the Hale and Heath End area of Farnham.

“Our aim is to work with girls in mind, body and spirit. We want to help girls realise their potential, worth and value.  We hope to do this is by providing a safe place where girls can learn more about themselves and others and a supportive environment where they can be encouraged, receive advice, have fun and develop as young women.

“We aim to put on trips and residentials where girls can have opportunities to do activities away from home.  GEMS hopes this program will provide an encouraging atmosphere to find faith and values within a Christian based ethos.

“GEMS is an inter church project run by women from different churches in Farnham and the surrounding area.”

What the GEMS project does:
 Girls evenings:

This is a space where girls can come relax, have fun and spend time with their friends.  Every month there is usually a craft activity, pamper corner (where the girls can have their nails done, have a foot spa or their hair straightened), several games consoles and a cafe which serves healthy snacks and a few treats.  The whole space is set up to have a cafe style environment.

Once a month on a Friday evening, girls evenings are currently held at Holy Family Church on Alma Lane between 7:30-9:30pm, with a 50p entry charge.

 Trips & Residentials:

This give the girls the opportunity to do something they may not normally be able to do, outside of the Farnham area.  We have run two trips at Christmas time to Winchester for Ice Skating and Christmas shopping.  Last summer we took a group to Cheddar in Somerset for a weekend residential themed ‘It’s Amazing to be a Girl’.

In the future we hope to establish:
  Wellbeing Evenings:

An advice evening, we hope to invite people to work with the girls on a topic relating to them eg. body image, healthy eating, baby-sitting skills.

  Mentoring:

We hope to have a team of female youth workers available to meet with any girls who would benefit from having a mentor.  Further information of this will be given in time.
